Australia, the land down under, has always been a distant dream for me, a place located on the other side of the world that felt almost mythical during my childhood. The idea of seeing it with my own eyes and spending a significant amount of time there seemed unlikely, but I consider myself truly privileged to have had the opportunity to explore this vast and diverse country, creating unforgettable travel experiences along the way.

While the phrase “memories that will last a lifetime” is often overused in travel writing, for Australia, it rings true rather than being mere rhetoric. Although my journey didn’t involve the stereotypical backpacker experiences, I encountered moments that were truly life-changing. Here, I aim to distill these experiences into my top ten, showcasing the beauty and diversity that Australia has to offer beyond its well-known cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

Many travelers focus on the major cities, and rightfully so, but exploring Australia requires time to delve into the vastness of this continent-sized country. While it may be impossible to cover every corner, a month-long sabbatical allows for a comprehensive journey, incorporating internal flights, road trips, and even long-haul bus options like Greyhound Buses. During my time in Australia, when my parents visited, we had the luxury of a month, exploring and driving through various landscapes.

In the current landscape of 2020, domestic travelers need to consult local travel advice due to state border closures. For the rest of us, planning and dreaming of an Australian trip are the activities of the moment, with the hope that these unforgettable experiences will serve as inspiration.

Learn about Aboriginal art and culture in Port Douglas:

Port Douglas, with its proximity to the Daintree Rainforest, the world’s oldest rainforest, provides a dream setting to delve into Aboriginal art and culture. The Mossman Gorge offers Dreamtime walks led by locals, providing insights into their history. Janbal Gallery, run by the talented artist Binna, offers workshops on traditional Aboriginal art methods, making it a unique and immersive experience.

Meet a Quokka on Rottnest Island:

Rottnest Island, a short boat ride from Perth or Fremantle, is home to the “happiest animals in the world” – the Quokka. These smiley marsupials roam freely across the island, creating a joyful atmosphere. Beyond meeting the Quokkas, the island itself is a picturesque destination, ideal for cycling between white sand beaches, rocky outcrops, and enjoying the serenity.

4WD on the world’s largest sand island at Fraser Island:

Fraser Island, a World Heritage-listed natural attraction, is the largest sand island globally. Its unique features include rainforests growing on sand, crystal-clear lakes, and the presence of Dingoes. Whether exploring by tour or hiring a 4WD and taking the ferry, the experience is unparalleled.

Road trip the Great Ocean Road from Adelaide to Melbourne:

The iconic Great Ocean Road road trip is a must-do in Australia. Starting in Adelaide, taking time to explore Mount Gambier and its impressive sinkhole adds depth to the journey. The allure of the 12 Apostles along the Great Ocean Road is well-known, but the stops in between offer hidden gems and diverse landscapes.

Hang out with ‘Roos and Koalas:

No Australian travel experience is complete without encounters with iconic fauna. Magnetic Island Koala Park and spots along the Great Ocean Road provide opportunities for up-close interactions with Koalas. For Kangaroos, parks outside Adelaide offer unique experiences in natural settings.

Witness Vivid light festival in Sydney (or NYE):

Sydney, with its iconic landmarks, steals the heart of many travelers. Timing a visit to coincide with events like New Year’s Eve or the Vivid light festival adds a magical touch. Vivid transforms the city with light projections, creating a captivating atmosphere during the winter months.

Admire the Great Barrier Reef from above (and Whitehaven Beach):

While snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef is a popular experience, seeing it from above during a flight provides a unique perspective. The grandeur of the reef becomes truly apparent, accompanied by the stunning view of Whitehaven Beach. The experience, though not the cheapest, is worth every penny.

Watch the magical light change at Uluru:

Uluru, a spiritually significant site, underwent a positive change with the ban on climbers. Witnessing the colors changing during sunset, the vastness of the empty space dominated by Uluru, creates a magical ambiance. The Outback, with its barren beauty, offers a unique and enchanting landscape.

Tour Parliament House in ACT:

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) might not be a top mention in travel lists, but touring the purpose-built Parliament House provides a fascinating insight. The unique shape of the building, coupled with the progressive atmosphere of the ACT, offers a different perspective on Australian politics.

Visit the local Victoria wine regions:

Exploring the Bellarine Peninsula from Melbourne, a less-frequented region compared to the Great Ocean Road, unveils a delightful experience. The warmth of locals, incredible wineries, and the overall ambiance make it a hidden gem. Taking the time to appreciate Victoria’s diverse offerings beyond the well-trodden path is truly rewarding.

While these ten experiences capture a fraction of Australia’s allure, the country has much more to offer. From Tasmania to Western Australia, each region has its own set of unique memories waiting to be created. As I look forward to returning to the land down under, this list is sure to expand, and I welcome any suggestions for future adventures in the comments. Until then, safe travels!
