As the first rays of sunlight paint the sky in golden hues, early risers in search of a unique experience head south to the sunrise city of Aruba, San Nicolas. This eastern gem of the island has traditionally been a favored spot to witness the dawn, but in recent years, it has undergone a transformation that has thrust it into the limelight.

San Nicolas is now more than just a city; it is a vibrant creative community, a carnival hotspot, and a cultural hub. The city has undergone a renaissance, thanks to significant investments in the arts. Street walls adorned with both international and local artistry have turned the streets into a vibrant canvas. Moreover, pop-up Carnival experiences have extended the joyous vibes beyond the annual carnival festivities, making San Nicolas an increasingly popular destination for visitors.

Whether you find yourself here at sunrise or any other time, consider lingering a while to immerse yourself in acclaimed street art, discover artisan goods, and perhaps be serenaded by the melodic tunes of steel drums and the rhythmic beat of dancing as the evening unfolds.

For many years, San Nicolas was a place that few tourists ventured to, remaining primarily a local community. Situated less than thirty minutes from the capital, Oranjestad, cruise-ship arrivals often preferred the nearby beaches or shopping in the colonial-style buildings, while long-term visitors frequented the northern beaches of the island.

However, as the local creative community flourished, so did the city. The Cosecha Creative Centre played a pivotal role in this transformation, creating employment opportunities and fostering international collaborations among street artists. The result is a compact city that retains its local charm but is now adorned with wall murals that easily fit into any Instagram grid.

The Cosecha Creative Center serves as an excellent starting point for visitors. This airy building, situated on a pointed corner plot, functions as a shared studio where artists collectively create and display their art and products. Visitors can purchase local artists’ work or even participate in creative workshops, leaving their own mark on the city.

Embarking on a street art walk with tour leaders from Cosecha is one of the best ways to explore San Nicolas. The walk takes around 90 minutes and unveils the hidden gems of local artistry, telling the stories, history, and heritage behind each mural. It goes beyond a mere showcase of art, offering insights into the vibrant culture of San Nicolas and the entire island.

Launched in 2016, the Aruba Art Fair further elevates the creative atmosphere in San Nicolas. The fair showcases a diverse range of arts, including paintings, sculptures, and prints throughout the city. With thousands of attendees over its three-day run, the event has become a celebration of creativity, featuring performances, talks, tours, and workshops for all ages.

San Nicolas is also home to the recently built Carnival Museum, which pays tribute to the island’s colorful and electric carnival festival. Opened to the public in late 2019, the museum displays the history of Aruba Carnival alongside flamboyant outfits adorning mannequins. While a relatively brief visit suffices, it provides valuable insights into the significance of these celebrations for Arubans.

Timing your visit right may allow you to experience pop-up Carnival events in San Nicolas. Music emanates from the streets, and vibrant outfits adorned with jewels and feathers dance around you, creating a whirlwind of color. Thursdays, in particular, offer a taste of the carnival celebration, with music, mini carnival dances, and handicrafts bringing the streets to life.

However, the pinnacle of the festive spirit in San Nicolas occurs during January and February when Aruba Carnival takes center stage. The month-long celebration culminates in a spectacular display of color, music, laughter, and dance. The events leading up to the grand celebration provide numerous opportunities for visitors to join in the festivities.

Whether San Nicolas is referred to as the second city, the sunrise city, or the creative capital of Aruba, it undeniably stands out as a worthwhile destination, especially during the carnival celebrations. Regardless of the time of year you choose to visit, make your way to San Nicolas to admire the passionate work of the locals and share in the joy of their hometown.
