A day in Kyiv, Ukraine: an unexpectedly remarkable city deserving more than just a brief visit.

The city of Kyiv, Ukraine, bathed in the warmth of summer, welcomed me with a soothing melody that wafted through the air. The tall townhouses, adorned in hues of pink, yellow, and bubblegum blue, set the stage for an open-fronted piano that held a small crowd enthralled while indulging in candy floss.

The skilled pianist’s smooth strokes resonated with the surroundings as the sun illuminated the gold church domes scattered across the skyline. A gentle breeze rustled through a nearby rose garden, and on the periphery of my vision, the formidable pillars of a Soviet-era building stood tall.

Kyiv, before my eyes, painted a starkly different picture than the tumultuous scenes broadcasted worldwide in 2014. The protests on Independence Square and the subsequent events were defining moments for Ukraine, yet as a tourist, the capital city revealed itself as an enchanting destination, perfect for a leisurely city break.

Originally planning a brief 36-hour visit, I quickly realized my miscalculation on this lazy Sunday afternoon. Kyiv, in contrast to my typical city breaks, exuded a relaxed atmosphere, prompting me to embrace the unhurried pace rather than darting between tourist attractions.

Parks dotted the landscape, providing spaces for people to lounge and relax, while beaches hosted comedy clubs and bars for entertainment. Ice creams and candy floss added splashes of color, and the air was filled with the sounds of music and art.

Beside St. Peter’s Church, a green-domed beauty symbolizing the city’s religious architecture, rows of artists displayed their works along the boardwalk. The city’s creativity harmonized with Soviet-era structures, creating a fascinating tapestry.

Exploring Kyiv’s gold-domed churches and cathedrals became a day-long endeavor. As a predominantly Orthodox nation, the city boasts numerous places of worship. Dating back 1400 years, Kyiv’s history predates the current geopolitical landscape, offering a rich tapestry of experiences.

Following a wooden footpath to the Dnieper River, I reached a glass walking platform overlooking the Friendship Monument. Dedicated to relationships with neighboring nations, the monument bore a painted crack symbolizing strained diplomatic ties.

Lost in the laid-back Sunday vibe, my quest for traditional cuisine encountered a humorous hiccup. Navigating a self-serve style restaurant proved confusing, with gestures and pointing resulting in some disapproving looks. Despite the culinary adventure, Georgian cuisine emerged as a highlight, introducing me to delights like pomegranate tea and Khachapuri, a cheese-filled bread.

Continuing my exploration, St. Sophia’s Cathedral and St. Michael’s Cathedral, both adorned with gold domes, stood as iconic landmarks. Strolling through St. Sophia’s territory, I witnessed an opera singer warming up for an evening concert, adding to the city’s cultural charm.

As the sun set, Independence Square came alive with bands playing near the Independence Monument and music fountains captivating the crowds. The fountains, reaching into the sky, created a harmonious atmosphere, and families enjoyed the last hours of the weekend.

Reflecting on my preconceived notions from media images five years prior, Kyiv had defied expectations. The next morning, with limited time before my flight to Kazakhstan, I observed dedicated street cleaners maintaining the pristine state of the square.

Taking the metro to the Motherland Monument, I acknowledged that seeing everything in Kyiv within 36 hours was an ambitious goal. Boarding my flight, I bid farewell to the serene Kyiv and prepared for the next leg of my journey to Central Asia. As an Uber whisked me to the airport, the chaotic traffic mirrored the city’s diverse charm. My short stay in Kyiv had left a lasting impression, and as I embarked on my Central Asian adventure, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this trip would be one for the books, filled with unforgettable
